The promoters behind Ireland's Oxegen festival have announced that the event will be taking a break in 2012.

Festival promoters MCD have said that the event, which usually takes place at Punchestown Racecourse in Naas, will be back in 2013. A statement said:

Oxegen like Glastonbury is taking a year off in 2012 and will be back July 2013. Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas & peaceful New Year. Keep rockin' in 2012 and we will see you in 2013.

The festival, which this year was headlined by Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Black Eyed Peas, has a capacity of 80,000 and has been running since 2004.

eFestivals reports that suspicions were raised about the event's future when no early bird ticket announcement was made when ticket details were revealed earlier this year for its sister festival T In The Park.

T In The Park 2012 headliners The Stone Roses will be playing Dublin's Phoenix Park on July 5, the day before the weekend which the festival would have been held on.
