Speaking about the collaboration with NPR, Hayley Williams revealed that she and Joy have been friends for years. “I love that I got to sing this with someone who I have shared my pains and my stories with for quite some time,” she said. “Someone whom I know well and who I’ve sat and listened to as they share their own pains. It was never meant as romantic song between lovers but always a song to a friend. Now it’s even more special. I think of it as an ode to sisterhood. Close friendship between women who share their stories with each other and who lift each other up and understand one another.”

This summer The Civil Wars officially confirmed their decision to split, with both Joy Williams and John Paul White launching solo projects. Though tensions within the band were well publicised, technically news of of the US country duo’s split was not confirmed until August 5.

The duo, who won two Grammys for their debut album ‘Barton Hollow’ and released their final album ‘The Civil Wars’ in 2013, scrapped a whole UK tour in 2012 blaming “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition” for the cancellation.
