Paul McCartney hails 'phenomenal' Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt

The Beatles legend says he can't wait to see Bolt compete at the 2012 games

Paul McCartney has revealed that he is a big fan of "the fastest man on earth", Usain Bolt.

The Beatles legend is due to perform tomorrow (July 27) at the Olympic Games opening ceremony, which will kick off two weeks of sporting events across London. One of the Games' biggest stars is Usain Bolt, the Jamaican sprinter attempting to defend the three gold medals he won at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

As a thank-you for his musical input, McCartney is entitled to request tickets for his favourite Olympic events. When asked by Lauren Laverne on 6Music which sport he is most looking forward to, McCartney replied: "I'm actually a big fan of athletics. People say to me 'What's your favourite sport?' and it's really one of mine. When that's on telly, I don't go out."

McCartney also revealed that he is especially excited about watching world record holder Bolt compete. He added: "I love the sprint – obviously the 100 metres. I've got to see Mr Bolt because, you know, he's just a bit phenomenal. Wow, yeah! I don't think anyone can beat him, so that will be great to see."

Yesterday (July 25), McCartney had shared his thoughts on the Olympic soccer tournament, criticising Team GB for omitting David Beckham from its number. "I would've thought Beckham would be first choice because of his huge contribution to getting the Olympics. But some idiot decided otherwise," McCartney said.

McCartney has previously revealed that he will be the final act to perform at the opening ceremony tomorrow (July 27), but other acts are yet to be confirmed. Earlier today (July 26), it was reported that the Arctic Monkeys may feature on the line-up after a journalist tweeted a photograph appearing to show Alex Turner rehearsing at the Olympic Stadium.
