Paul McCartney beaten to Number One on Official Albums Chart by John Newman
McCartney's latest album 'New' enters the Official Albums Chart at Number Three
The Beatles legend enters behind Rudimental's 'Feel The Love' collaborator John Newman, whose debut album 'Tribute' lands at Number One, and Pearl Jam, whose 10th studio album 'Lightning Bolt' debuts at Number Two.
"It's such an amazing thing for an artist to have a Number One album, especially on a debut," Newman told OfficialCharts.com. "It means so much to me and I just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me and helped make this happen. Can't wait to see everyone on tour next week!"
Right behind McCartney, another veteran singer, Cher, enters at Number Four with 'Closer To The Truth', her first album of new material in 12 years. Further down, Gary Numan debuts at Number 20 with his 20th studio album 'Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind)'.
Over on the Official Singles Chart, US band OneRepublic score their first ever Number One with 'Counting Stars', which pushes last week's chart-topper, 'Wrecking Ball' by Miley Cyrus, into second position. The band's frontman Ryan Tedder, who has penned hits for Beyoncé and Adele, told OfficialCharts.com: "This is by far the coolest thing that's happened to us. I've had a number of Number Ones with other artists, but never one with this band. This is where I spend most of my time; these guys [guitarists Zach Filkins and Drew Brown, bassist Brent Kutzle and drummer Eddie Fisher] are like my brothers and we've been everywhere and back. This is the highlight of the year!"
Meanwhile, boyband Lawson enter at Number Three with 'Juliet', James Blunt climbs to four with 'Bonfire Heart' – which, coincidentally he wrote with Tedder – and Eminem debuts at Number Five with 'Rap God', the latest single from his forthcoming album 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2'. Other new entries in the Top 10 this week come from London drum'n'bass artist Wilkinson ('Afterglow') and Australian rapper Iggy Azalea ('Change Your Life').
