Paul McCartney was hospitalised after contracting a virus that led to the postponement of a number of Asian tour dates.

Representatives for the star released a statement saying that McCartney was admitted to a hospital in Tokyo where he received "successful medical treatment". The statement read: "Since contracting a virus last week that led to the postponement of tour dates, Paul received successful medical treatment at a hospital in Tokyo. He will make a complete recovery and has been ordered to take a few days rest. Paul has been extremely moved by all the messages and well wishes he has received from fans all over the world."

The former member of The Beatles recently had to cancel a run of Asian tour dates after falling ill from a viral infection. USA Today reported that the musician had been hospitalised after the infection worsened.

Earlier this week Paul McCartney cancelled a further tour date in South Korea on doctors' orders, pulling his May 28 gig at Jamsil Sports Complex Main Stadium. The cancellation followed the scrapping of all of McCartney's scheduled dates in Japan after he contracted a virus.

McCartney postponed two dates in Tokyo last weekend, explaining that he had come down with a virus and was told by doctors not to perform. A message on his website confirmed the cancelled dates with doctors ordering him to have a "complete rest" and that he "hates to let people down".

McCartney's next scheduled gigs are a 19-date US tour beginning in June.
