Paul Weller, Ian Brown and JOE STRUMMER last night (July 12) drew the biggest crowds of the NME-sponsored MOVE festival in MANCHESTER.

A near-capacity crowd flocked to Lancashire County Cricket Club to see Paul Weller air new songs, including one called ‘A Bullet For Everyone’, from forthcoming new album 'Illumination', due in September.

The former Jam frontman’s drew mostly on his ‘Heavy Soul’ period, before climaxing with epic versions of ‘Wild Wood’ and ‘Woodcutter’s Son’.

As well as that of the people, Paul Weller also won the approval of fellow punk/new wave legend Joe Strummer. Speaking to NME.COM, the former Clash frontman enthused, "I like this, this has got soul. You call it kind of rock soul, it’s a distinctive brand, it’s an area he’s mined out, he’s made his own, it’s dead funky, you know. I just like to lay back, and you can’t deny this ain’t good, funky music."

Strummer also gave his approval to the current generation of guitar acts, in particular Hives. "They’re new individuals in rock we’ve never encountered before. Whatever they call themselves, everything that say is full of intelligence. It’s pisskillingly funny! God give us Hives."

During his own set with his band the Mescaleroes, Strummer included Clash songs as is custom, including ‘Rudie Can’t Fail’ and ‘I Fought The Law’.

Earlier, Ian Brown’s hometown show was marred by technical difficulties, forcing him to entertain crowds by twisting his left hand through 360 degrees. He also went one step further than the Glastonbury set’s introduction to Stone Roses classic ‘Fools Gold’ by singing the opening line. Despite hopeful cheers from the audience, he stopped there and didn't continue with the track.

The day was opened by Shed 7 and Haven. Move concludes today (July 13), with a Mancunian-themed day featuring New Order,[a][/a], Elbow and Alfie.
