Bookmakers suspend BRIT Awards betting

A flurry of suspicious Paul Weller-related bets were placed over the weekend

Bookmakers including William Hill, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power have stopped taking bets on the BRIT Awards amid fears that information about which artists are set to win awards has been leaked.

The move comes after a flurry of bets were placed on Paul Weller to win the British Solo Male Artist award at various William Hill shops yesterday (February 15).

Each bet was around £50.

Because they were placed at different branches of William Hill, they are virtually untraceable, reports The Telegraph.

Weller has now been made favourite to win the category. His odds have been slashed from 5/1 as an outsider to 1/5 as the favourite. The other nominees are The Streets, Ian Brown, James Morrison and Will Young.

A jury of 1,000 music industry figures are asked to judge the non-public categories at the BRIT Awards by voting online. Their votes are counted and verified by an official body.

A BRIT Awards spokesman said “Every precaution is taken to keep results under lock and key.”

The BRIT Awards take place this Wednesday (February 18) at Earls Court in London.
