Paul Weller has said he is "delighted" after winning £10,000 in damages after Mail Online published a series of paparazzi shots of him and his family on holiday together.

The High Court in London ordered Associated Newspapers – who publish the Daily Mail and The Mail On Sunday – to pay the money after Weller and his family complained.

In October 2012, seven paparazzi shots of the singer appeared on Mail Online under the headline "A family day out: Paul Weller takes wife Hannah and his twin sons out for a spot of shopping in the hot LA sun".

The couple said the shots were "plainly voyeuristic". They were shot by a paparazzo who had followed the family in Santa Monica, California, and continued to take photographs despite being asked to stop.

The pair sued Associated Newspapers Ltd (ANL) for misuse of private information on behalf of their children – daughter Dylan, who was 16 when the pictures appeared online, and twin sons John-Paul and Bowie, who were 10 months old. The children's faces were not pixellated in the shot.

ANL argued the images were inoffensive and that the Weller family had previously chosen to open their private family life to the public. However, the family's lawyer David Sherborne, said that Hannah Weller had not been in the public eye before her marriage and that she had taken active steps to prevent the twins' faces being shown in the media.

"We are absolutely delighted with the positive outcome of our privacy case against ANL," Paul and Hannah Weller said in a statement. "As we are with the fact that in a detailed and very carefully reasoned judgment, the Court has upheld our complaint that unpixellated photographs taken of our children while out enjoying some quality time with their family should not be published without consent. That is why we brought this action on their behalf."

Paul Weller will release a new compilation album 'More Modern Classics', featuring tracks from the past 15 years of the singer's solo career, on June 2. It will feature the new track 'Brand New Toy', which will be released on Record Store Day (April 19).
