Pete Doherty was joined onstage by The La's singer Lee Mavers at his O2 Academy Birmingham gig last night (March 25).

The performance is something of a coup for fans of The La's, as the notoriously elusive Mavers has hardly played any gigs since the seminal Liverpool band since their brief reunion in 2005.

Mavers played 'Son Of A Gun' during Doherty's main set. He was backed by Doherty's solo band, who include his Babyshambles' bandmates Drew McConnell and Adam Ficek, Blur's Graham Coxon and producer Stephen Street.

During the show's encore, Mavers returned to the stage once more to play 'There She Goes'.

Babyshambles manager Adrian Hunter explained to NME.COM how the inclusion of Mavers at the gig came about.

"Lee and Peter met via John and Gary Bandit," he said. "There was an impromptu jam in the dressing room last night pre-gig, and 'Son Of A Gun' was included in the set.

"'There She Goes' was only added before the encore with no rehearsal at all, although everyone obviously knew the song."

Hunter also speculated on whether Mavers would play any more gigs with Doherty, who's solo tour now calls at Newcastle, Edinburgh and London.

"Regarding future shows I'd say...You never know," he revealed.

However, fans hoping Mavers may be about to reform The La's shouldn't hold their breath, as the singer recently told a fan he "didn't see the point" in reuniting the band.

Doherty has also now recorded his performance for this week's episode of the BBC One chat show Friday Night With Jonathan Ross.

Writing on his Twitter account about the recording, drummer Adam Ficek said that the performance had been fun, adding that the show's other guest "Babs [Barbara Windsor] was ace".

The programme airs on BBC One tomorrow (March 27) at 10:35pm (GMT).

Pete Doherty's solo tour calls at the following venues:

Newcastle O2 Academy (March 26)
Edinburgh Picture House (27)
London Troxy (29)
