Pete Doherty slams BNP at LMHR festival

He tells crowd it's 'Time For Heroes'

Pete Doherty led the fight against the BNP yesterday (May 30) at the Love Music Hate Racism festival in Stoke.

Taking place at the Britannia Stadium, the all-day event saw a diverse range of artists and speakers urging people to vote against the BNP in the upcoming European Elections.

Taking to the stage at 8.30pm Doherty played a four-track set, kicking off with The Libertines' 2002 debut single ‘What a Waster’, on which he changed a line to sing: “You two bob racist cunt”.

He was then joined by Babyshambles bassist Drew McConnell and two dancing ballerinas, who flanked him during ‘Last of the English Roses’.

Doherty closed off with ‘Time For Heroes’, telling the crowd that “in times of crisis it’s time for heroes”.

Pete Doherty played:

'What a Waster'
'Last of the English Roses'
'Albion'
'Time For Heroes'

Earlier on in the day former Destiny's Child star Kelly Rowland thrilled the crowd with songs such as ‘I Love You’ and the more recent ‘Work’.

The event also saw sets from Chipmunk, Beverly Knight and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.

Reverend And The Makers finished off the night with a mixture of new songs from their forthcoming album ‘A French Kiss in the Chaos’ and favourites such as ‘Heavyweight Champion of the World’ and ‘He Said He Loved Me’.

Speaking to NME.COM, frontman Jon McClure said: “The Britain I know is the one of harmony where we live together and alongside each other, the idea of the BNP repulses me. But there’s a feeling here that we can change things, it’s exciting times."

The European Elections take place on June 4.

more publicity for the BNP. problem is, when bands and politicians use the media to condemn the BNP, it's just fuelling the flames. the BNP doesn't pose a threat to democracy in the UK, they're not to be taken seriously. better for musicians to stay out of politics and ignore them all together.

Ah really? Pete Dohert is against BNP..? I didn't know that. Are you telling me next that he's also against pushing grannies in front of cars?Serioursly, why is it news every time a musician speaks out against the BNP? Of course he's against the BNP, and so is just about anyone else who's got a tiny bit of sense.Thisreminds me of a piece of news on this pages from a couple days ago: "Noel Gallagher writes song", which is the equivalent of reporting the a "bakes bakes a bred"....

That's right,'ignore them all together' - and they'll just magically go away on their own. 'They don't pose a threat to democracy in the UK'?-Unfortunately their views ARE taken seriously by some as being valid, and while that is the case ignoring them altogether is not, and never will be the answer.

"the BNP doesn't pose a threat to democracy in the UK"...are you mad? Of course they do! Far too many people DO take them seriously, and the party have recently done a lot of campaigning and trying to make themselves appear respectable, by covering up their true motives and beliefs. It's fantastic that events like LMHR are organised to speak out and try and stop the BNP, and it's absurd to say LMHR is pointless and rubbish. Complacency is dangerous, and if everyone just ignored the BNP, then we would soon see their influence increasing...

You can't "Vote against" parties, therefore mentioning the BNP in any context this vocally just gives them publicity anyway. But then again, he is a two bit crack head...

are you guys insane? this is not bnp coverage or anything of the sort. the solution to this disgusting problem is to SPEAK OUT AGAINST THEM!to 'ignore them' is exactly what germany did in the 1930s. not enough people spoke out against them. and yes they are a threat they are very close to gaining seats in europe which will give them access to funds to make them stronger. SPEAK OUT AGAINST!
