Pete Doherty: 'Libertines will play festivals in 2010'

Babyshambles man outlines plan for next summer

Pete Doherty has confirmed his plan to reform The Libertines to play UK festivals in 2010.

The Babyshambles frontman told NME.COM that he had already convinced former bandmates John Hassall [bass] and Gary Powell [drums] to reunite for gigs, and that as soon as Carl Barat agreed, dates would be finalised.

Barat had previously told NME.COM that he and Doherty had "left it as next year" in terms of Libertines plans.

"It's going to happen [The Libertines playing festivals], you know," Doherty said. "I spoke to John Hassall, he's well up for it." Referring to Powell, he added, "He said he would [play the shows]."

Doherty went on to joke that he was so desperate to play the festival shows he would even consider hiring a Carl Barat lookalike to stand in if the real one wouldn't sign up.

"Maybe I could reform The Libertines without him, like he did without me [Barat played Libertines shows without him in 2004 when Doherty was kicked out of the band for drug use]," he said. "I'll put an advert in NME: 'Carlos lookalike required'."

Pete Doherty is set to play at the V Festival this weekend (August 22-23) as a solo artist.

To read the full feature interview with the singer/guitarist, in which he discusses his V Festival plans and how he plans to take on The Killers and Oasis' Liam Gallagher, get the new issue of NME, out today (August 19).

We're in the middle of a recession... the LAST thing we need is this talentless shower of shit coming back to remind us how appalling they are.

I don't see much point in The Libertines reforming as Pete already plays the best Libertines songs when touring with Babyshambles or when on his solo tour

I say don't reform as they will never be able to capture the excitement, intensity and charisma onstage that they used to produce, giving more people an excuse to slag them off. Saying that, Ill still go and watch them.

"hassall & powell are up for it"No kidding.

If they were as good as the first time round then it would be amazing, but there's no way to guarantee that and i don't know if they should risk tarnishing what they've already achieved with a half arsed comeback. And shityourlegoff, do you just fucking hate everyone?

Its just the greatest news of my day. And that was already a good day. Thanks!

There is No point of the re-formation now... its 3 years to late. It would be as exciting as farting in a elevator.... Predictable and unpleasant for all involved... It cant be that lucrative anymore surely?? Anybody any idea when the new Chris Morris film is being aired?

I saw these jokers supporting Supergrass about 7 years ago...load of old bollocks, all those 15 year old girls who liked them at the time will have grown up by now.

IndieWriter, ignore shityour..... Some people hate him for the drugs. I think it will be great. Obviously not with the rawness of UTB or the emotion of The Libertines but Pete and Carl just have a spark on stage. Proven at that MTV show where they performed impromptu at that Camden fashion show (sidepoint being me rage at in an hour show dedicating less that three minutes to Pete and Carl reuniting on stage and 57 minutes to caricaturising Pete, I did win a copy of the Books of Albion from it though!).Other than (The) Verve and (sometimes) Oasis, no band has had what they have had since the Roses. If Petes antics make you hate him/the music then you are not quite evolved enough and should just do whatever the Mail feels you should and leave musical integrity to us.I am sure Lilly Allen and The Feeling will keep you going!Pete and the Libs forever!!!

Is it just me or would a tour of venues Brixton size, rather than do a big festival show where i could see them being a bit vunerable

I don't think its too late, Look at what they have achieved when they were nothing, now they're both nothing again! John Hassell left shortly and returned when they made it large, thats happened again (PLEASE DON'T LEAVE YETI,although Mr Underwood doesn't REALLY need you). It's time for heroes, lets go back to the good old days, I know people can't stand them now, but this is their last post on the bugle, Libs fans, don't be shy, we overpower all none believers, and we will still be singing when we can no longer hear the music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is by far the best news I think I have ever heard (that may sound very sad, I agree).Let's just hope they are just as good the second time round, although I can't see the chemistry being as great.

i dont care where they play, as long as they do. I think that the wait would be worth it as theres been such a massive build up to it because of all the rumors, and as someone who was a bit to watch them first time round but had to just listen to the albums, it would be great to watch one of the most energetic and talented bands of the decade

Is it too harsh of me to call you all a bunch of feckin' sheep? They were never great, you were just drunk at the time and over excited. That's a cold hard fact.

Jesus i really dont know what is worse. People who claim The Libertine to have been a mercurial band , saviors of music etc , or The Libertines themselves.Get a life. They are shite n onions. 3 half decent songs and thats your lot. Im no fan of Oasis but comparing them to Oasis is laughable.

This band sucks big time I don't know what's so good about them, they might sound new or original but it still sucks. Their songs have no melody and are not catchy enought to like it. I can't wait for Bernard Sumners new project called bad-lieutenant-never-cry-another-tear which sounds very good instead of the crap they have here.
