Pharrell Williams and Hans Zimmer have been named music consultants for next year's Oscars.

The N.E.R.D man will team up with film composer Zimmer to oversee the music at the 84th Academy Awards in February, working with Brian Grazer, who will produce the ceremony.

Reacting to the announcement, Williams said:

I am honoured to work with my mentor and teacher, Hans Zimmer and I have wanted to collaborate with Brian Grazer on something for years.

"I cannot believe I will be joining them and their teams on the most prestigious show of the year, the Academy Awards."

Grammy Award-winning Zimmer has composed scores for numerous films, including 'The Lion King', 'Gladiator' and 'Rain Man', and collaborated with Johnny Marr on the score for 'Inception'.

Eddie Murphy had been announced as the host of the ceremony, but pulled out after Brett Ratner resigned his position in the wake of a controversial homophobic remark.

Oscars veteran Billy Crystal will now present the event.
