Ex-girlfriend tells US court that the producer could be 'a demon' when drunk

A prosecution witness in Phil Spector's murder retrial claims the legendary producer once threatened fans with a gun after they mistook him for actor Dudley Moore.

Dorothy Melvin, who dated Spector for four years in the 1990s, says the incident happened after a group of fans approached him as he got out of a limousine at the notorious Manhattan hangout Elaine's.

Melvin said Spector was initially thrilled to be recognised, but that his mood changed when one of the group exclaimed, "I can't believe we just met Dudley Moore," reports the LA Times.

Spector is then alleged to have pulled a gun on the group before chasing them down the street.

"He was screaming and yelling," said Melvin.

The testimony came on the second day of Spector's murder retrial. The producer is accused of killing actress Lana Clarkson at his home in 2003.

Seeing Dudley Moore, meeting him, him pulling a gun on you and chasing you down the street and then him turning out to be a twisted Phil Spector must count as the most surreal occurence in any and all of those people's lives to date
