Plan B has revealed that he was £40,000 in debt before his second album 'The Defamation of Strickland Banks' came out.

"I didn't start making any money from live shows until about two years ago," he told BBC Newsbeat. "I was 40 grand in debt before Strickland Banks come out. So the first Strickland Banks tour I did I was in debt."

Plan B's second LP, 'The Defamation of Strickland Banks' was released in 2010, following on from his 2006 debut 'Who Needs Actions When You Got Words'. It has sold over a million copies to date.

"People see you on film posters and they see your album out," he continued. "[They] see your videos and think you're making money. A massive misconception."

The rapper also spoke about his charity, Each One Teach One, which will help teenagers from east London break into the music industry. "Kids out there need to understand it's hard work," he said. "You can't just write a song, shoot some video and think you've made it. The reality is very different to how people see it. It took us years to feel like we were actually getting somewhere…The best get rich scheme is probably the lottery."

Plan B recently announced a full UK arena tour for February 2013. The rapper, who released his new film and accompanying soundtrack 'iLL Manors' earlier this summer, will play 11 shows across the UK.

Plan B will play:

Newcastle Metro Radio Arena (February 1)
Manchester Arena (2)
Cardiff Motorpoint Arena (4)
Nottingham Capital FM Arena (5)
Bournemouth International Centre (7)
Birmingham LG Arena (8)
London O2 Arena (9)
Brighton Centre (11)
Plymouth Pavilions (12)
Glasgow SECC (14)
Aberdeen AECC (15)
