Cerys Matthews appears with the band in Cardiff

Pogues joined on stage by Catatonia star

Former Catatonia singer Cerys Matthews joined the Pogues on stage in Cardiff last night (December 12).

The Irish veterans were playing the Cardiff International Arena when Matthews joined them, taking the part of the late Kirsty MacColl on their Christmas classic ‘Fairytale Of New York’.

“Cerys Matthews did a wonderful job performing with Shane [MacGowan],” one fan posted on the band’s official forum. “It's just a shame Kirsty couldn't be there. Although I dare say she was there in spirit.”

Another messageboard poster added: “Cerys and Shane were wonderful for ‘Fairytale’ - made my night!”

The Pogues now continue their series of Christmas dates, which includes a three-night residency at London’s Brixton Academy next week (December 20-22).
