Portishead reveal plans for album number four

Portishead have revealed more about 'Third', their long-awaited new album, describing it as the "older brother" of its predecessors. Guitarist Adrian Utley has also described the album's sound as a departure in some areas. He told Billboard: “It sounds nothing like 'Dummy' or 'Portishead', but it’s definitely its older brother or sister. It’s the same mindset we’ve always had, only further down the road.”

Adrian Utley says it won't take another ten years

Portishead have revealed that they are planning to make a fourth record and have vowed its creation will not take as long as their forthcoming album.

'Third' is the follow-up to 1997's 'Portishead' and took over seven years to make.

Guitarist Adrian Utley said: "It [album number four] won't be another 10 years, I swear. Man, it's just that life passes so quickly, and you get home and do other things and you try to enjoy your life. We've got children now, and we just wanted to live life, rather than being slaves to this career, if you like.

"To do a massive tour at the moment would be a folly, I think. If we do a year of touring again, we won't want to see each other for a while."

Utley also told MTV News that Portishead are angry 'Third' has leaked prior to its release date of April 28, saying: "We're definitely pissed about it. But I suppose there's nothing you can do about it. You can only hope that it's not going to fuck everything up for you, because I think, in this world, there are downloaders and people who buy. I don't know if you can convince downloaders to buy.

"If we don't sell records, we can't make any more records. We're just not rich people."

It is a shame that the record got leaked and potential sales may suffer. However for those people waiting 7 years and found a way to get it early... they are going to listen early, love it and buy it. Then go out and buy the box set too. For the nonfans hopefully it inspires them to go to a show or buy a teeshirt and become a fan. I hate to see such a great band impacted by money and other peoples immaturity.

I also think it's a bit out of order to release the new album weeks after some of the live shows. Surely that is even more of an incentive for people to try and find a bootleg version so they may at least be familiar with some of the tunes.

I think the people who download without buying the CD are this generation's version of the person that always copied other people's CDs without paying a penny to the artist.I used to download albums months before they came out because I couldn't wait to hear them. Unfortunately when it came to buying the CD/LP the excitement was lost as I'd already heard the album endless times before. My new year's resolution was to resist downloading albums from my favourite artists and experience the thrill of buying an album on the official release date. The event in itself adds SO much to the value of the record. So, I've only heard 'The Rip' (wow!!!) and 'Machine Gun' (wow, again!!!) once through official sources and I'm SO excited about getting my boxset and will be avoiding (but recording for future listening) any Portishead TV and radio performance until the 28th!
