PRIMAL SCREAM played an intimate hometown gig in GLASGOW last night as part of the CARLING HOMECOMING series of shows.


The outfit played a 19-song set for 500 fans at The Garage club in the city where their career began 17 years ago, and the set was filmed for a future TV show.


The band were on top form, winding up the crowd for not being lively enough early in the set, with frontman Bobby Gillespie joking they were almost as bad as a London audience, to good-natured jeers. The audience were firmly behind the band, however, with many of them climbing on to shoulders for set-highlights, old favourites ’Movin’ On Up’ and ’Rocks’.


The first hour of the show drew mainly on their last two albums ’Evil Heat’ and ’Exterminator’, with the second half bringing out the classics, plus a cover MC5’s ’Kick Out The Jams’ to close the show.


The verdict from fans was a unanimous thumbs-up. Mark Devine, 20, from Kilsyth, said: “It was excellent to see them in such a small venue, it’s a regular haunt for me and they’re one of my favourite bands. It was total punk attitude, plus crossing into the electro stuff they’ve got a modern edge. They’re just cool as fuck!”


After the gig, Mani, who had earlier declared from the stage that he was “feeling Glaswegian tonight”, did an impromptu DJ set at the city’s Art School, to an equally raucous welcome.
