Primal Scream cover Suicide for new single

Band celebrate Vega's 70th by honouring him on vinyl

Primal Scream have covered Suicide's 'Diamonds, Fur Coat, Champagne' for a new, limited-edition 10-inch vinyl pressing.

The band join the likes of The Horrors and Bruce Springsteen, both of whom have released Suicide covers to celebrate frontman Alan Vega's 70th birthday this year as part of a vinyl release series on the Blast First Petite label.

Speaking of the cover in a statement, Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie said the band collaborated with Miss Kitten to create a glam-infused track.

"Suicide songs are so perfect and fully realized that it was hard to pick one and reinterpret it in a personal way," he said.

He added: "We chose 'Diamonds, Fur Coat, Champagne' as we loved the lyric and also its sci-fi futuristic sound. We did a garage rock glam version with French electro chanteuse Miss Kitten in the end, and tried to bring out the pop song that lies beneath every Suicide track."

The release, which is limited to 3,000 copies, will be available to buy from March 30 at Blastfirstpetite.com.

Cult US No Wave singer Lydia Lunch has also recorded a Suicide cover for the project. Her adaptation of 'Frankie Teardrop' is also released on March 30.
