Lianne La Havas joins Prince on stage at London's Koko
Prince was due to play three shows in one night, but instead let third crowd in for second set's extended encore
Having confirmed that the band would be performing three shows in one evening, a series of extended encores meant that they actually only made it through two performances, which came to an end at around 1am. The few hundred people queuing for the final show were let in for free at midnight. They witnessed a series of encores including 'Cause And Effect', 'Dreamer', 'Screwdriver', 'How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore' and 'U Got The Look'.
"You like my party?" asked Prince towards the end, having been onstage nearly five hours. "You like my band? You like my friends? You like my hat?"
Earlier Lianne La Havas joined Prince onstage at the first Koko set, which began at around 8pm, performing her own track 'Lost And Found' accompanied by Prince on the piano. Prince's arrival in London had been announced by a press conference at La Havas' house. She tells NME about the experience in the video below.
Having announced the shows on Friday, fans had queued outside the Mornington Crescent venue throughout the day, and some overnight. "I arrived at 10am," said Steve from Brighton, first in line for the midnight show that wasn't to be. "I paid £70 for the first show and joined the queue again as soon as it was over. It was amazing – I'm deliriously happy."
Since arriving in London for his 'Hit And Run' tour earlier this month, Prince has set a precedent for playing multiple shows in the same night. He performed two sets at Camden's Electric Ballroom on February 5 and at a similar case followed this up with two 'acoustic' shows at King's Place on Friday (February 14), where tickets cost £70. A week earlier, his performance at Shepherd's Bush Empire consisted of one long set and cost £10.
As announced at King's Place, Prince plays London's Ronnie Scott's tonight (February 17) and will appear at the Brit Awards on Wednesday (February 19). He will then travel to Manchester to perform two further shows.
The setlist for Prince's first Koko show was as follows:
'Let's Go Crazy'
'She's Always in My Hair'
'I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man'
'Take Me With U'
'Lost and Found' (with Lianne La Havas)
'Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)'
'Play That Funky Music'
'When Doves Cry'
'Sign O' the Times'
