Pulp, Elastica, Supergrass for 'Common People' Britpop compilation

The Stone Roses and Cast feature – but no Oasis or Blur…

A new three-CD compilation album, 'Common People. The Britpop Story', is set for release on June 8.

The compilation features Pulp, The Stone Roses, Supergrass and Super Furry Animals – but not Oasis or Blur, who are widely credited to have kick-started the 1990s movement and were the two biggest UK bands of the time.

Sleevenotes for the album have been written by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley, who wrote for Melody Maker during the Britpop era.

I think it's good that Blur and Oasis aren't on there, it puts the spotlight on some other bands that didn't get the praise they deserved at the time. However, someone please explain how Nancy Boy by Placebo can be classed as Britpop?

Sweet Jesus. That is the most disusting thing I've ever seen! It's a shame that a few great songs by great artists have been lumped in with so much shit. It depresses me to think that in the future bands like the Super Furries, Pulp and Supergrass will be associated with dross like Rialto, Gay Dad and Hurricane #1. No wonder everyone looks back on Britpop with such disdain.

They would most likely have a 2nd compilation with more Blur & Oasis songs on it, I think they are seeing how well this one would sell first without 2 of the biggest Britpop bands on it.

No Oasis or Blur? Mind you, you still don't see Beatles or Stones tracks on sixties compilations, and I've never seen The Clash on a punk compilation. Some great tracks, some utter rubbish and some nice surprises (Spearmint, Lodger, Geneva). I wonder what Luke Haines makes of an Auteurs' track being included on here, given how scathing he was (and is) about Britpop.

Not sure why Placebo are on this, and it's a shame that there is no Blur or Oasis, but they weren't the be all and end all of Britpop. As this album shows, there were a lot of other decent bands around at the time.

We're living in the iTunes era, so who is going to buy this? Especially as there are only 5 or 6 tunes worth owning on the 3 cd's. Its hard to think of a "scene" before or since that had so many overhyped bands hanging on to the coat-tails of the giants, and unlike punk or acid house its lasting contribution is basically nil. Celebration at this point seems pointless.

Duffy as in the Britpop band (and not that great), not as in the annoying 60's throwback muppet! Great album!
