The jailed members of Pussy Riot have been nominated for Time magazine's influential Person Of The Year Award.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich, the latter of whom has been freed on probation, are collectively up for the prestigious title, one of a 38-strong long-list of nominees.

Also up for the title are such luminaries as Barack Obama, Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgauter, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Fifty Shades Of Grey author EL James, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and the Higgs Boson particle. The only other musicians on the list are Jay-Z and Psy.

Time wrote of the Russian feminist punk collective: "In a year when so many voices of liberty and dissent have suffered harsh retribution, the Russian feminist punk group Pussy Riot has paid a particularly steep price for provocative political expression."

The winner will be named by the magazine's editors on December 21, while a 'people's choice', based on votes cast on the magazine's website, will be revealed a week earlier.

The three women were sentenced to two years in prison in August after performing an anti-Putin song in a Moscow cathedral. Samutsevich, was released on appeal after her lawyers successfully argued that she hadn't even managed to take her guitar out of its case before being kicked out of the cathedral.

The two remaining imprisoned members were later sent away to remote prison camps, where conditions are reported to be harsh. The womens' lawyers had argued that they should remain in jail in Moscow to be closer to their small children, however Tolokonnikova was sent to Mordovia, about 500 km (300 miles) east of Moscow, and Alyokhina to the Perm region, which is about 1,100 km (700 miles) east of the capital.
