Queen's 'Greatest Hits' LP has been named as the biggest-selling album of all time in the UK, according to a new survey.

The Official Charts Company have compiled a list of the Top 40 best-selling records of all time for the BBC and claim that the 1981 compilation album, which includes favourites such as 'Another One Bites The Dust' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody', has shifted 5.8 million copies.

The full Top 40 will be revealed by BBC Radio 2 DJ Tony Blackburn this Sunday, but The Beatles' 'Sgt Pepper' and ABBA's compilation album 'Gold' are in second and third place, with sales of 5 million and 4.9 million respectively.

However, the chart reveals that the 2000s birthed 14 of the best-selling albums on the list, with Adele's '21' in the sixth spot while Leona Lewis's 2007 debut 'Spirit' is in 20th.

Keane, Coldplay, Travis and Kings Of Leon are some of the other names to make the list, along with the likes of Madonna and Fleetwood Mac. Queen, The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Coldplay are the only artists who have two separate entries in the list, while the UK is responsible for 23 of the 40 albums in the chart. Only nine of the entries were released by US artists.

Speaking about the chart, Blackburn said: "This chart is a real mixed bag. I think listeners will be quite surprised. There are artists in there you would expect to see in a countdown of this nature but not necessarily at the positions that they are."

Queen had been set to headline this year's Sonisphere festival with Adam Lambert on frontman duties, but the bash was cancelled last month (March 29). A rescheduled date is expected to be announced soon.
