R Kelly trial: Day 12

Judge may issue warrant for reporter

R Kelly trial: Day 12

The R Kelly trial continued today (June 3) in Chicago, with Judge Vincent Gaughan threatening to issue a warrant for the arrest of a newspaper reporter.

Chicago Sun-Times reporter Jim DeRogatis in 2002 gained possession of the video at the centre of the child pornography case that could see R Kelly sentenced to 15 years in jail. DeRogatis today failed to appear at a morning hearing, leading the judge to give the reporter’s attorney 15 minutes to find something in Illinois law that gives the reporter the right not to show up in court.

The judge previously discounted First Amendment arguments that would have given the right to the reported not to testify, says the Associated Press.

The prosecution wrapped up their case in court yesterday, with the defense beginning their case tomorrow. The jury today has the day off.
