R Kelly says he's been 'writing a lot of country songs'
R Kelly has revealed that he has been writing "a lot of country songs".

The R&B singer, who released his 11th studio album 'Write Me Back' in June last year, told Vibe that his genre-hopping was an attempt to prove that he has a talent that's "more than just sexual songs".

"I've really been writing a lot of country songs," he said. "I used to get criticised for doing a 'Bump & Grind' then turning around and doing a gospel song. But the truth is I'm glad I have a gift that allows me to switch lanes."

He later added: "My talent is more than just sexual songs. There was a time I desperately needed for the world to know that I was no category guy. My whole goal in life was to reach that certain success where people will say, 'Hey, that guy can do anything. He's the Evil Knievel of music. He's jumping over 15 buses!"'

Kelly also spoke about his now-infamous hip-hop opera Trapped In The Closet. "You are always going to have the negative and the positive," he said. "Trapped in the Closet is something I didn't even expect. It is strange. But if you are going to be called a genius, which again I don't think of myself as, then you have to [break those barriers]."

"You can't hate on that," he continued. "You have to respect a person willing to sacrifice their career to try something new. You can say a lot about Trapped in the Closet. But the one thing you can’t say is it’s not entertaining. And aren’t we in the entertainment business?"

In November 2012, Kelly said he was writing a prequel book to Trapped In The Closet and had plans to turn the project into a Broadway musical. Earlier this year, meanwhile, Meanwhile, an online petition in the US was launched asking the White House to adopt his classic single 'Ignition (Remix)' as the nation's new national anthem.
