Radiohead win composer award
Guitarist Jonny Greenwood is honoured
The guitarist who became a composer in residence at the station after starting to work on classical composition in between Radiohead albums was named Favourite Artist at this year’s awards.
The work that clinched the prize for the guitarist was 'Popcorn Superhet Receiver’, beating eight other orchestral pieces that the BBC commissioned in the last year.
Greenwood’s composition was inspired by a work written for the victims of the Hiroshima nuclear attack, written by polish composer Penderecki, and blends strong chords with radio static.
Justifying the Radiohead man’s win, station controller Roger Wright declared: "It is a great example of Radio 3's unique cultural patronage".
