Aralie.com aims to support new bands

Radiohead's revolutionary 'pay what you want' scheme for their last album 'In Rainbows has been adopted by a new music website.

Aralie.com, which launched last month, is the first site of its kind to allow users to choose how much they pay - including nothing - to download songs from its library, claiming it is the best way to beat music piracy.

The site's founders say that it allows bands to "beat the old adage that 'They're only in it for the money'".

"We've taken what Radiohead did and made it mass market," founder Wyatt Ferguson told NME.COM.

Looks good - actually, Noisetrade.com has been doing this for a little while longer I believe - good site. And Cherryecho.com offers bands a profile where they can offer 12 free downloadable songs - so a whole album if they want! And also offers the chance of a £5,000 recording budget. Cherryecho, noisetrade, aralie, sellaband, slicethepie - it's good to see so many alternatives to major labels legally utilising the power od the mighty web!

Skirting over the fact that Kristin Hersh (ex-Throwing Muses) released an EP by her band 50 Foot Wave on a 'pay what you want even if it's nothing' basis three years ago, check out Cashmusic.org for a similar deal. C.A.S.H. stands for Coalition of Artists and Stakeholders and it's well worth checking out. Currently they've got Kristin Hersh, Donita Sparks (L7) and Deerhoof involved. Kristin Hersh for example is releasing a new song a month on a pay what you like basis, and has even been putting the pro-tools mix stems up for download to encourage remixing.
