An extremely rare Radiohead demo cassette from 1986 has sold for £2,000 at auction.

According to the auctioneers, Omega Auctions in Stockport, the 27-year-old cassette tape is the "only known copy to exist". At the time of recording, the band were still known as On A Friday and the tape features six songs that have never appeared on any official Radiohead releases: 'Fragile Friend', 'Girl (In The Purple Dress)', 'Everybody Knows', 'Mountains (On The Move)', 'Lemming Trail' and 'Lock The Door'. The nine-track demo cassette is rounded off by remixes of 'Fragile Friend', 'Lemming Trail' and 'Lock The Door'.

The demo cassette, which comfortably exceeded its estimate of £1,000-£1,500, was snapped up by a collector in the US, Omega Auctions told NME this morning (September 14). More information and a photo of the cassette is available here.

In July of this year (2013) auctioneer Paul Fairweather clarified the origins of the item to NME, saying: "It has come directly from an old friend of the band who was at school with them at Abingdon School. We have copies of his school yearbook from 85/86 showing him and all four members of the band."

Meanwhile, Omega Auctions also sold a very rare Oasis demo cassette yesterday (September 13). The 'Live Demonstration' tape features eight tracks, six of which were recorded live in Liverpool in 1993, before the band were signed by Alan McGee. The cassette, which the auctioneers obtained from a "close friend of the band", gives a contact number for Oasis belonging to Liam and Noel Gallaghers' older brother Paul.

The tape had been expected to fetch between £500-£750 but ended up selling for £1,750. More information and a photo is available here.
