Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello has dedicated the band's Hero Of The Year honour at the Shockwaves NME Awards to the group's fans.

On Wednesday (February 24), the band were revealed as winners of the award after their song 'Killing In The Name' snatched the Christmas Number One slot last December from The X Factor's Joe McElderry due to a Facebook campaign.

"While it is an honour to be named Hero Of The Year by the NME," he said, "the real heroes of the UK music world are the hundreds of thousands of fans who shook the system last Christmas while helping the homeless [fans were encouraged to donate to the Shelter charity]. We thank and congratulate them."

Jon Morter, who started the Rage campaign, also spoke of his delight at the award.

"I'm delighted that Rage have won Hero Of The Year," he said. "Their last-minute performance on BBC Radio 5Live was an amazing moment, their support of the campaign really helped us to achieve what we'd set out to do... a Number One to stop The X Factor's dominance and £100,000 donated to a good cause.

"The fact they've agreed to give their proceeds to UK charities as well has really solidified their status as heroes... roll on June for the free celebration gig!"
