CBGB served with eviction notice

The legendary New York music venue is ordered to vacate…

CBGB served with eviction notice
CBGB has been served with an eviction notice, one week after the lease for the legendary club expired.

Proprietor Hilly Kristal, who established the club, which was cradle for punk in the 1970s, has been ordered to vacate the building following the decision by the non-profit organisation, and the building’s landlord, The Bowery Residents’ Committee (BRC) to not renew the contract.

BRC executive director Muzzy Rosenblatt revealed last week that the organisation intends to find a new tenant for the space which has always housed CBGB.

Kristal and the Save CBGB Coalition have responded to the eviction notice, according to MTV News.

They issued a statement saying: “There is no valid reason why CBGB should leave our present historic location. All we want is the same thing (New York Governor George Pataki, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg) and 43 City Council members want — that is to sit down with the BRC and negotiate in good faith a new lease that is fair to all parties."

Kristal is not only refusing to vacate the venue but is continuing to book acts.

During a free concert last week in New York’s Washington Square Park, 76-year-old Kristal said that he would “cut the locks” if CBGB was ever shut.

He has also requested a sit-down meeting with Mayor Bloomberg, after the latter expressed an interest in working with both CBGB and BRC calling the venue “a great New York City institution” and “part of our culture”.

Kristal and the Save CBGB Coalition have previously made a proposal to the BRC to accept a significant rent increase and provide a larger security deposit.
