MTV Video Music Award nominations unveiled

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Madonna and Panic go head to head

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Madonna and Panic At The Disco lead the nominations for this year's MTV Video Music Awards.

The Chilis are up for seven nominations while the Las Vegas newcomers and Madge are up for five nominations each at the awards spectacular, which takes place in New York on July 31.

'Dani California' is up for Video Of The Year, Best Group Video, Best Rock Video, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Editing and Best Cinematography.

The clip for Panic's 'I Write Sins Not Tragedies' has also been given the nod in the Video Of The Year category along with Best Group, Best Rock, Best New Artist and Best Art Direction.

Madonna's Number One hit 'Hung Up' is up for Best Female, Best Dance, Best Pop, Best Choreography and Video Of The Year.

Green Day, who had seven nominations last year, have only received one for Best Rock Video this time around for 'Wake Me Up When September Ends'.

Of the British nominations, U2 have landed two nominations in the Best Special Effects and Best Editing categories for 'Original Of The Species'.

Among the acts confirmed to perform at the ceremony include Panic At The Disco, The Killers and Justin Timberlake.
