REM nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Patti Smith and The Stooges up for honour
REM have been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
The band are first time nominees. Patti Smith and Iggy And The Stooges are also in the running for enshrinement.
Other nominees for the accolade include Van Halen, The Ronettes, Chic, The Dave Clark Five, Grandmaster Flash and Joe Tex.
Artists become eligible for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 25 years after the release of their first record.
Inductees are voted for by by 700 music industry figures, and this year they have selected A&M Records founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss in the non-performer category.
