Rihanna could become a judge on the next series of X Factor, according to reports.

The Sun says that the show's boss, Simon Cowell, is eager to boost its popularity by securing a new star-name to appear on the judging panel and has reportedly offered Rihanna a role on either the US or UK version of the programme in 2013.

With producers keen to increase the show's viewing figures after they reportedly fell to a six-year low, a source said: "Simon is a huge admirer of Rihanna and knows she's star quality. As well as bringing an aura to the panel thanks to her current standing in music, she is also feisty and will make great TV. Simon loves these sort of characters."

The source also claims that Cowell is eager to recruit controversial singer Chris Brown for the US version of the show, adding: "The US X Factor has improved on the first season's ratings but it's got some way to go to reach Simon's expectations. Adding Chris to the panel will certainly create a talking point."

James Arthur won the 2012 X Factor earlier this month. Arthur, from Middlesbrough, beat competition from both Jahmene Douglas and Christopher Maloney in the final weekend, which ran for four hours of television across Saturday and Sunday night (December 8, 9), earning a contract with Simon Cowell's SyCo in the process.

His debut single 'Impossible' looks set to claim the Number One spot this evening (December 16) after it was reported earlier this week that it had already shifted 255,000 copies, beating 2012's previous biggest first week total of 152,000 which was achieved by Cheryl Cole's 'Call My Name' in June.

Rihanna, meanwhile, was recently confirmed as one of the headliners for next year's T In The Park. She will top the bill at the Scottish bash alongside Mumford And Sons and The Killers, with other acts on the line-up including Jake Bugg, Alt-J and Paloma Faith.
