'STUPID' CHRISTMAS?

With just five days to go, the stars are seeing off the challenges of Daniel Bedingfield and outsider Gordon Haskell...

Robbie Williams and NICOLE KIDMAN are currently ahead in the race for the coveted Christmas Number One spot.

But the big-hitting duo, currently top of the pops with their single 'Somethin' Stupid', are being pushed all the way by rank outsider Gordon Haskell - and now the race is firmly on, with just five days left before the final result is announced (December 23).

Haskell's 'How Wonderful You Are' is currently 8,000 sales behind Robbie Williams in third place, though he has had day less sales than Robbie Williams and Nicole and Daniel Bedingfield, whose 'Gotta Get Thru This' is at Number Two. Both Bedington and Robbie Williams benefited from the lucrative Sunday sales.

There are no other new entries vying for the top. The next highest new entry comes from Faithless, who sit at 27 in the midweeks, a place ahead of David Gray's 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye'.

Robbie Williams is set for a merry Christmas double. His 'Swing When You're Winning' album is beating all-comers and is a practical certainty for Number One on Sunday.
