Rod Stewart and Susan Boyle perform at Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony

The ceremony took place at Glasgow's Celtic Park

Rod Stewart and Susan Boyle were amongst the performers who helped kick off 2014’s Commonwealth Games.

The Opening Ceremony took place at Glasgow’s Celtic Park and was opened by actors John Barrowman and Karen Dunbar performing a song written specifically for the event.

Stewart appeared on stage in a silver suit and backed by dancers in silver sequin dresses to perform his 1991 single ‘Rhythm Of The Heart’ after singer-songwriter Amy MacDonald had begun the performance with the people of Glasgow. Later, Britain’s Got Talent winner Susan Boyle sang ‘Mull Of Kintyre’ during a flyover by the Red Arrows.

Other Scottish music also featured in the ceremony, with The Proclaimers’ ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ soundtracking a ballet routine and Calvin Harris’ ‘Feel So Close’ played as dancers filled the stage with chairs. Elsewhere, Lorde’s ‘Royals’ and AC/DC’s ‘Back In Black’ were aired as the Oceania teams entered the stadium, while England walked out to music from acid house group S’Express. Scotland’s team, meanwhile, were greeted by the sounds of Aberdeen band The Shamen’s ‘Move Any Mountain’.

Rod Stewart then returned to the stage towards the end of the Opening Ceremony. Dressed in black and white, he played ‘Can’t Stop Me Now’ from his latest album, 2013’s ‘Time’. Primal Scream’s ‘Movin’ On Up’ played over the PA after the Queen had announced the Commonwealth Games open.

It is reported that Kylie Minogue has been booked to perform five songs at the Closing Ceremony. That event takes place on August 3, before the Australian singer’s Kiss Me Once tour, which kicks off in Ibiza on August 22.
