The Rolling Stones have announced that they will play a free gig on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach next year.

Up to 1.5 million people are expected to attend the show, which will take place on February 18.

A Rio official for special events, Ana Maria Maia told a news conference: “City Hall considers this show to be like another New Year. We will treat it like that."

The Rolling Stones are currently playing across the US as part of their ‘A Bigger Bang’ world trek.

Traditionally, up to 1.5 million people gather on Copacabana Beach to celebrate New Year’s Eve, and organisers say that they are expecting a similar number for the band’s gig, according to Reuters.
