Spiritualized (Jason pictured) and Roni Size are to play both Creamfields and Universe '98, this year's two new UK weekend dance festivals born from the demise of the Tribal Gathering dance events.

Universe and the Mean Fiddler Organisation - currently battling over the rights to the name 'Tribal Gathering' which they had organised together for a number of years until their partnership was dissolved last year - are now organising the separate events.

Mean Fiddler's new festival Creamfields, which takes place at Matterley Estate, near Winchester, Hampshire, on May 2 & 3, also has The Chemical Brothers on its bill. The event, which is being run jointly by Vince Power's organisation and Liverpool superclub Cream, will have nine tented arenas featuring a host of DJs and dance acts.

Also appearing are Beth Orton, Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Sasha, Jon Digweed, Dr Bob Jones, Jon Pleased Wimmin, Paul Oakenfold, Way Out West, BT, Slacker, Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox and Dave Clarke. The price for Creamfields has yet to be confirmed but tickets will be available by phoning 0171-344 0044 or 0151-708 9979. For more information, telephone 0181-963 0940.

Universe '98 will be held in the grounds of Knebworth House, near Stevenage, on May 23 & 24 and will feature Run DMC, Black Grape, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Monkey Mafia, Moby, Headrillaz, Plaid, Joey Beltram, Jon Carter, James Lavelle, Jeff Mills, Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Miss Moneypenny DJs and Luke Slater alongside Spiritualized and Roni Size.

The event will feature over 100 DJs and 50 live acts in eight tents and one main outdoor stage and is licensed for 60,000 people. For more information, telephone the 24-hour information hotline on 0839 444 572. Tickets, at '60 each in advance, can be bought via the credit card hotlines on 0990 344 4444 or 0115 912 9129.

Spiritualized have been confirmed as support for part of Radiohead's US tour, starting March 28. Bjvouml;rk is support for the remainder.
