Royal Blood’s Ben Thatcher denounces ‘rock ‘n’ roll’ behaviour: ‘I’m too OCD to trash a hotel room’

Band also say their success should be a wake-up call to likes of Simon Cowell

Chart-topping rock band Royal Blood have denounced the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.

The duo appear on the cover of the brand new issue of NME, which is on newsstands now and available digitally.

Asked about their lifestyle, drummer Ben Thatcher said: “We enjoy cooking, we enjoy watching Match Of The Day just the same as any other people. You’ll see us at the garden centre, maybe eating a brownie.”

He continued: “Trashing a hotel room? I don’t understand the thrill of that. Me, I’m very OCD, and that would just ruin the start of my day. I like to leave a hotel room almost as tidy as I found it.”

In the same interview, frontman Mike Kerr says that the success of the band’s debut album, which sold 65,812 copies in its first week on sale, should be seen as a wake-up call for the music industry. “Didn’t Simon Cowell have someone in the charts that week? We beat him, and it’s time that people like him start scratching their heads as to how this happened and how to become popular… It’s time to invest in the real deal.”

Meanwhile, a poll conducted by NME.COM following the announcement of this year’s Mercury Prize nominations has seen Royal Blood emerge victorious with nearly a quarter of all voters agreeing that they deserve to follow in the footsteps of previous winners such as Arctic Monkeys, Alt-J and Klaxons.

Shortly behind them were Damon Albarn, FKA Twigs and Bombay Bicycle Club, while at the other end of the poll, Young Fathers and Kate Tempest were left with a smaller share of the votes.
