Santogold: 'I got called a lesbian techno rapper'

But Santi White doesn't mind getting negative MySpace comments

Santogold: 'I got called a lesbian techno rapper'

Santogold has said she likes receiving negative comments on her MySpace page, because it proves she's doing something right musically.

The singer, who has toured with Coldplay, Kanye West and Snow Patrol, revealed that she often receives messages from fans who've seen her support other artists - and not all the comments are complimentary.

"I did get one message that said 'I hate your lesbian techno rap'," the singer told The Independent.

"When I get stuff like that I know I am doing a good job. It means I am getting people outside of my zone freaked out by the fact that I don't fit into something they understand. It means I am pushing some boundaries, I guess."

Santogold also defended allowing her songs to be used in adverts, saying that it's a better way to connect with audiences compared to radio stations and music television channels.

She claimed: "It's a new way in the absence of radio support to get new people to hear your music. MTV doesn't play videos anymore. So for me it has been the best way to get my music exposed."

The singer's 2008 single 'Creator' was used in a hair product commercial.
