Saoirse Ronan opens up about designing Ed Sheeran’s ‘Galway Grill’ tattoo

The Ladybird actress practiced her handwritten tattoo for half an hour before Sheeran had it inked

Saoirse Ronan admitted she only practiced her handwriting of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Galway Grill’ tattoo for half an hour before the singer had it inked on his arm.

The actress, who appeared on The Graham Norton Show to talk about her latest film Ladybird, talked about her experience filming Sheeran’s music video for ‘Galway Girl’.

Speaking about Sheeran, whose latest album Divide was released last year, the Irish actress said, “He’s huge everywhere, but he’s beloved in Ireland.”

Host Graham Norton geared the conversation towards Sheeran’s infamously misspelled inking and asked, “He got that really tattooed?”

Ronan replied: “He did, yeah. That’s my handwriting”

The actress, who has received an Oscar nomination for her latest film, went on to explain that she practised for half an hour before Sheeran went ahead with the tattoo. Actress Debra Messing, who also appeared on the chat show, interrupted to ask: “And that’s what you came up with?”

Ronan, 23, stars in Great Gerwig’s directional debut Ladybird. The coming of age comedy earned both Gerwig and Ronan Oscar nominations. It’s Ronan’s third, having been nominated in 2008 at the age of 13 for her role in Atonement and again in 2016 for Brooklyn.

Earlier this month, Sheeran was announced as one of the headliners for the BBC’s The Biggest Weekend, dubbed the ‘Glastonbury replacement’, while the festival is on its fallow year.

He joins Taylor Swift, Noel Gallagher and Manic Street Preachers at the multi-site event which takes place across the May Bank Holiday (25-28 May).
