Grunge supergroup The Gutter Twins make UK debut at Shockwaves NME Awards show

Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli team up for marathon set

Grunge-era supergroup The Gutter Twins made their UK debut at the latest Shockwaves NME Awards show last night (February 21).

Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees/Queens Of The Stone Age and Greg Dulli from Afghan Whigs brought their long-gestating collaboration to KOKO for a two-hour performance.

At only their fourth show ever, the duo, who dub themselves "the satanic Everly Brothers", played songs from their forthcoming album 'Saturnalia', along with a few surprises.

The band covered Jose Gonzales' 'Down The Line' and Massive Attack's 'Live With Me'. And in a further nod to trip hop, the duo welcomed former Tricky collaborator and album guest star Martina Topley-Bird onstage for 'All Misery/Flowers'.

But the real fan treats came during an extended encore that featured Greg Dulli and the Twilight Singers cuts 'Papillon' and 'King Only' alongside Lanegan solo tracks 'River Rise', 'No Easy Action' and 'Methamphetamine Blues'.

Actually, Martina sung on "The Body". I couldn't really hear her over the guys, she's got such a tiny voice.

I've seen "Eat a Peach" appear in a lot of set lists, though the song is actually called "Each to Each"

Pedantry aside, the show was absolutely fantastic. I really wasn't expecting to hear Shadow of the Season (the start of it anyway), and No Easy Action, River Rise and Methamphetamine Blues were amazing.

And topping the whole thing off with "Number Nine" was perfect. Can't think of a better set closer.

I wish I could watch the whole thing again, I really do.
