Silver Jews film documentary of Israeli tour
A documentary about the middle-eastern leg of the Silver Jews Israeli tour is set to be screened at various film festivals across the US, including its premiere at South By Southwest in Austin.

The 51-minute documentary follows David Berman and co as they play two in Tel Aviv, and embark on a day trip to Jerusalem.

The notoriously media-shy Berman expressed to friend and producer Matthew Robinson that he would like the Israeli portion of the tour to be documented, prompting Robinson to recruit director Michael Tullyto shoot the project.

Speaking to NME.COM, Tully explained why he was approached to film the documentary.

He said: My first film, Cocaine Angel, had a pretty good festival run in 2006, and I guess Matthew trusted me behind the camera. As for David, I only chatted with him (and [his wife] Cassie) briefly over email before the trip, so I think I was more apprehensive than he was.

Tully also added the object of the film was not to put together an all-encompassing background documentary, but rather to gain a personal insight into the bands visit to Israel.

We simply hoped to capture the band's experience in Israel as intimately and honestly as possible," he said. "I figured that if we did that, we would have something worthwhile on our hands.

He is also clear that it is not a live-performance DVD, as only a small portion of the movie features actual live music footage.

Tully admitted: Only about seven of the film's 51 minutes consist of live footage, so we're certainly not talking about a concert film here. The rest of the music is taken from Silver Jews albums - from Starlite Walker to Tanglewood Numbers. Being a fan myself, I made sure to include enough music that would satiate the diehards.

Silver Jew will be screened at the following festivals:

Austin, TX South by Southwest Film Festival (March 9-17)
Sarasota, FL Sarasota Film Festival (April 13-22)
Nashville, TN Nashville Film Festival (April 23)
Boston, MA Independent Film Festival of Boston (April 25-30)
