Sinead O'Connorwill headline Womad in place of the late Bobby Womack.

Womack, who passed away on June 27, was due to headline the world music festival at Charlton Park on Sunday, July 27. It has been confirmed today (July 10) that O'Connor will step in as a replacement at the Wiltshire event, which takes place between July 24-27.

A spokesman for the festival said: "Just when you thought that no more remarkable names could be squeezed on to this year's cracking line-up, another one comes along… the compulsive and uncompromising performer Sinead O'Connor."

Known for hits including 1972's 'Across 110th Street', Womack's career spanned seven decades. He released his first single in 1954. Womack enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, appearing on Gorillaz track 'Stylo' from the band's third album, 'Plastic Beach'. This association with Damon Albarn led to the Blur frontman producing Womack's 2012 album 'The Bravest Man In The Universe', which was released by XL. He appeared at Glastonbury Festival in 2013.

Womack's health had suffered in recent years; he'd been treated for colon cancer and in 2013 told fans he had "signs of Alzheimer’s". In spite of this, he had reportedly been working with Snoop Dogg and Stevie Wonder on new material.

Womad's other headliners are Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba, Richard Thompson and Youssou N'Dour.
