Six By Seven guitarist SAM HEMPTON has walked out on the band, citing "musical differences" for his departure.

Hempton will be initially replaced for the band's European festival commitments by Tony Doggen, who has previously worked with Julian Cope and Spiritualized.

In a statement posted on the band's official website, www.sixbyseven.co.uk, the band describe their current situation as the "best and worst of times". They continue: "Sam will be pursuing his own projects in the future, for which we wish him all the best."

Six By Seven's first live appearance without Hempton will be at the Benicassim Festival in Valencia on August 6.

Six By Seven are currently in the studio writing and recording their third album, the follow up to this year's 'The Closer You Get', which is scheduled for release in 2001. The band are also planning to tour the UK in October.

It is currently unclear how many of the new tracks feature Hempton, or whether Tony Doggen will become the band's full-time guitarist.
