Slipknot DJ Sid Wilson has spoken about the brutal recording process of the band's 2001 second album 'Iowa'.

The band re-released the album on October 31 as a new package featuring two CDs and a DVD. The first CD features the original album along with the bonus track 'My Plague' (New Abuse Mix). The second disc includes the full live set from the band's 2001 London Arena show.

Speaking to Artist Direct, Wilson described the recording sessions as "really dark". He said of the album's recording: "It was a lot different than the first record. A lot of people had brought ideas to the table, but there was a lot of separation happening on the 'Iowa' album. It was really dark."

Wilson added that the recording was so punishing, it would leave drummer Joey Jordison in bandages after his hands bled. He added:

It was brutal. Joey's hands would be bleeding at the end of the day. Every day, his hands would be bandaged up from how hard he was pushing and trying to open the envelope even bigger.

The DJ also spoke about former bassist Paul Gray's role in the recording, saying that Gray played a crucial role in pushing the band to achieve the best results they possibly could on the album.

He said: "That was a really cool thing with Paul. He always brought that to the table big time. We'd be like, "This is it right here," and he'd say, 'No, there's something missing. That could be done a different way. There's another angle.' He would play the part forward, backward, upside down, and in reverse. His modem was open to so many different planets. I'm not really sure how many transmissions he was getting, but the way he would dissect a piece of music was unreal. His doing that kept everyone's minds open."
