Smashing Pumpkins wrap up UK tour

Billy Corgan's band close jaunt with mammoth set

Smashing Pumpkins brought their UK tour to a close with a mammoth London show last night (February 16).

The reformed rockers played the 02 Arena as Billy Corgan's band rattled off 28 songs for a concert that lasted for over two hours.

And there was no repeat of the incident at the gig at Nottingham Arena two nights previously, where the band, having played for an hour and a half, left the stage with an hour of their rehearsed material left unplayed.

In fact, the normally reclusive Corgan had spent the afternoon meeting fans at the Oxford Street branch of the Zavvi record store.

The singer wore a long, silver skirt as he led his band through songs dating from their 1991 debut 'Gish' to last year's comeback 'Zeitgeist'.

Later he brought the only surviving member and former founder of the Pumpkins, drummer Jimmy Chamberlain to the front of the stage as the pair performed an acoustic version of 'Try, Try, Try'.

Smashing Pumpkins played:

'Porcelina'
'Nightmare'
'Bring The Light'
'Tonight, Tonight'
'Mayonaise'
'Try, Try Try'
'Superchrist'
'C'Mon Let's Go!'
'Stellar'
'Perfect'
'Lily'
'The Rose March'
'Today'
'Tarantula'
'Stand Inside Your Love'
'Ava Adore'
'Drown'
'Bullet With Butterfly Wings'
'1979'
'That's The Way (My Love Is)'
'My Blue Heaven'
'The Everlasting Gaze'
'Car Crash Star'
'Daydream'
'Wound'
'United States'
'Lips Of Sugar'
'Cherub Rock'

They didn't close with 'cherub rock'. They didn't even play it. They were terrible last night. Pure self-indulgence and they basically fleeced the fans by not even playing their big hits such as 'disarm' or 'zero'.

I was there, very long with some necessary songs that needed to be played distinctly absent. And I was there til the end, and they did not play Cherub Rock

Quality gig but there were a few GLARING omissions from the set list none more so that 'Cherub Rock' which you have listed here! To end on 'Lips like Sugar' can only be described as a HUGE error.

Awesome none the less (apart from the crowd who didn't seem up for it at all! Odd. Odd)

Hang on...that's wrong. The song with Jimmy (who WASN'T a 'founder' of the band: he was the last to join) was 'Perfect', and they didn't play 'Cherub Rock'. The set was:

* Porcelina of the Vast Oceans
* Behold! the Night Mare
* Bring the Light
* Tonight, Tonight
* Mayonaise
* Try, Try, Try
* Superchrist
* (Come On) Let's Go!
* Stellar
* Perfect
* Lily
* The Rose March
* Today
* Tarantula
* Stand Inside Your Love
* Ava Adore
* Drown
* Bullet with Butterfly Wings
* Call the Shots [Xenomania] (tease)
* 1979
* That's the Way (My Love Is)
* My Blue Heaven [Whiting/Donaldson]
* The Everlasting Gaze
* Cash Car Star
* > Easy Livin' [Uriah Heep]
* > Foreplay [Boston]
* > For What It's Worth []
> Intro from Wasted Years [Iron Maiden] (tease)
* Daydream
* Wound
* United States

Encore:

* Lips Like Sugar [Echo and the Bunnymen]

Sort it out NME!

NME errors aside, I can't see how you can be a Pumpkins fan and NOT be impressed. Okay they didn't play 'Cherub Rock', but they DID play 'Today', 'Tonight Tonight', 'Ava Adore', 'Stand Inside Your Love', 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' AND '1979'. Out of 28 songs they played 11 singles. That's pretty good for me. Smashing Pumpkins have never been about playing the hits, this is probably the most singles-based setlist they've ever played! Besides you also had the non-single oldies and unexpected songs ('Porcelina', 'Mayonaise', 'Daydream', 'Wound') the cream of the new album, an Iron maiden Intro and a flipping Echo and The Bunnymen cover. There is literally nothing to complain about!

I can understand them not playing all the old hits - I wouldn't expect them to. But I'm afraid its hard to be impressed when a band (or should I say Billy Corgan & gang) completely lose the audience for periods during the set. I looked around and saw yawns toward the end. I thought there was some pretty self-indulgent stuff played, and the audience definitely became disengaged as a result. Couple of hilarious light hearted moments (his rant against ex-lovers, cover of a girls aloud song, or verse at least) couldn't make up for it. There were some good moments, but too few.

I didn't even stay for the encore and I've never done that before. Maybe I'm getting old.... sigh

they were quite indulgent in glasgow and billy went on a mini rant about linkin park and also mentioned garbage. i had to check it wasnt 2001 at that point! still, at 2.5 hours, you cant really complian!
