Smashing Pumpkins cover David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' - watch

Billy Corgan and co tackled Bowie classic at this year's SXSW

Smashing Pumpkins have covered David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' - click at the top of the page to watch.

The Billy Corgan fronted-band took on the classic Bowie song at this year's SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, but the footage has only recently surfaced online. The performance is taken from their Guitar Centre Sessions show, which, according to Rolling Stone, will be aired in full on DirectTV on May 17.

Smashing Pumpkins aren't the only ones to try their luck at covering Bowie's space-themed track recently - earlier this week, astronaut Chris Hadfield became the first person to record a music video in space when he sang the song from the International Space Station.

In March of this year, meanwhile, Corgan revealed that the band have started work on a new studio album. Speaking about the follow-up to their last LP 'Oceania', which was released in December 2012, the frontman said: "I'm starting to write new songs for the next Pumpkins album. I got a lot going on. I have a title for the next album but I won't tell. It’s going to be a cruel record. Vengeance is mine."

As well as an Other Stage slot at Glastonbury, Smashing Pumpkins will play three UK tour dates later this year, starting in Manchester on July 1, then performing in Glasgow on July 2 before returning later in the month for their London gig on July 22.

Smashing Pumpkins will play:

Manchester Academy (July 1)
Glasgow O2 Academy (2)
London Wembley Arena (22)
