Spiritualized, Doves, Bombay Bicycle Club play inspired sets at Latitude festival Spiritualized Tickets
Camera Obscura also play the lakeside bash
Spiritualized packed out Latitude’s Uncut Arena during their headline set last night (July 18), playing a fantastically-received set to the heaving crowd.
The band, led by Jason Pierce, came on to a smoke-drenched stage to cheers from the assembled masses, and kicked off with a rousing cover of ‘Amazing Grace’.
Though Pierce said little during the gig, fans were evidently impressed by the band’s choice of tracks, which saw them take in songs from across the frontman’s varied career.
An atmospheric ‘Soul On Fire’, taken from 2008’s ‘Songs In A&E’ went down particularly well with the crowd, while classic track ‘Lay Back In The Sun’ saw many fans throwing their arms aloft.
Earlier in the day, Camera Obscura played to an appreciative audience in the Uncut Arena, despite suffering sound problems during crowd pleaser and fan-favourite 'French Navy'.
Vocalist Tracyanne Campbell sang roughly half the song with no power coming from her microphone, and guitarist Kenny McKeeve's instrument also cut out during the track.
However, the Scottish group overcame the technical blip to follow the track up with a pumping version of their paean to Lloyd Cole, 'Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken'.
Doves' Obelisk Arena slot also drew a huge crowd who were able to bask in the sun as the Manchester band ran through a set that relied heavily on new album ‘Kingdom Of Rust’.
Before playing 2002 single 'Pounding', a sunglasses-wearing Jimi Goodwin made reference to the crowd's fancy dress attire.
"What's going on with all the wigs man?!" he said, referring to the afro hairpieces that many people were wearing. "I'm just seeing wigs everywhere! You...you, oh no, sorry not you, that's real!" he continued, adding: "Ok, this next one's called 'Pounding', and we'd like you to pound!"
Goodwin rounded off the band's well-received set by paying tribute to Latitude. "What a beautiful, beautiful festival - lovely vibes," he beamed.
Playing on the more intimate Lake Stage, Bombay Bicycle Club drew a sizable crowd made up mostly of younger festival-goers.
Single 'Dust On The Ground' garnered a frenzied response from the crowd, and this was reflected by the band when bassist/guitarist Ed Nash scaled his ten-foot speaker, standing on top of it with his head touching the stage's roof – much to the audience's delight.
During the band's final track, 'Cancel On Me', some fans even attempted to start a circle mosh, causing vocalist Jack Steadman to praise their efforts at the end of the set.
The frontman toyed with the audience - who asked him to throw them his drink - throughout the band's set. "This is mine, you can't have it!" he said at one point, taking a sip from his bottle onstage.
