St Vincent: 'I wish Kurt Cobain was still alive'

Annie Clark performed with the surviving members of Nirvana earlier this year

Annie Clark, better know by her stage name St Vincent, has said that she wishes Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was still alive.

Discussing her performances with the surviving members of the band at this year's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony and a following gig in Brooklyn, she told The Guardian: "I wish that Kurt was alive and no one else had to sing those songs." She also recently told NME that the 'wound' left by Cobain's death was 'still raw'.

Kim Gordon and Lorde also sang with the band. "The thing that was cool to remember was that they came up in that Olympia scene in the late 80s and early 90s, which was really feminist and queer and punk, which kind of gets whitewashed in their history. This was a really nice way to honour that," she added.

In the piece Clark also spoke about growing up in Texas and listening to Nirvana's 'Nevermind' whilst she learned skate tricks in her friend's garage. "It really did feel like Nirvana was a band for outsiders, that just happened to reach millions and millions of people," she commented. "I always felt like a weirdo, and I was."

St Vincent tours the UK later this month, including a run of rescheduled dates. The shows follow the February release of St Vincent's eponymous new album, which was recorded in Dallas, Texas with Dap-Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss, McKenzie Smith of Midlake and producer John Congleton.

St Vincent will play:

Cambridge Junction (August 19)
Leeds Met University (20)
Bristol O2 Academy (21)
Glasgow O2 ABC (26)
Gateshead The Sage (27)
Liverpool O2 Academy (28)
