From early memories of The Theme To Robinson Crusoe to the sublime life-changing inspiration of early [a]Cabaret Voltaire[/a]...

First Record You Can Remember
Theme From Robinson Crusoe

"I think it was made in the 1960s - the French version. I was thinking about it recently and it wasn't 'til then that I realised that I liked the programme because of the music. It was amazing. It really gave a sense of the isolation of this desert island. I was probably about nine, so it's not the first record I ever heard but it's the one that sticks out."

Record That Reminds You Of School
'Public Image' - Public image Limited

"I formed a band when I was about 13 and we all listened to punk - or what we thought was punk! And there was this kid who used to sing Public Image Limited all the time and I loved this song. It was the time when all the kids in school were listening to whatever was around in the charts. But we were making a conscious effort to find something of our own."

Record You Fell In Love To
'I'll Keep It with Mine' - Nico/ 'Bonnie & Clyde' - Serge Gainsbourg & Brigitte BardoT

"Basically - I don't want to be too, you know, soppy about this - but it's when I first met Laetitia and I used to go and see her in Paris because she lived there and I lived in London. We used to play these two records all the time. When I heard her sing, I thought her voice was a little bit like Nico on this song. Then eventually we decided to see if we could do music and we recorded these two songs in a cassette recorder in her bedroom to see whether it would work."

Heartbreak Tune
'Lady' - Dennis Wilson

"Well I have to say that I've never had any real heartbreak, not since I was about 14 or whatever. But this is the one I've chosen anyway. He was in The Beach Boys but it was a solo single that he did that was only released in Europe or something. It's just totally the most affecting song. He has this way of singing that's not put on at all. This song is the best example. His voice is almost cracking and breaking a little bit, but not in a corny way. And the music's beautiful too. It's just got that air of heartbreak about it, even though it's not strictly about that. It's just the way he sings it. That would be the song if I ever had an unfortunate heartbreak incident!"

Record That Evokes The Greatest Summer Of Your Life
'Jane B' - Jane Birkin

"I think the greatest summer was the one I was talking about earlier for when I fell in love in 1988. This really knocked me out when I first heard it. It's quite a simple tune and it's actually based around Chopin but don't let that put you off. All it is is someone reading out a police report of someone they found dead. So it just says, 'Name:Jane B; hair: brown' or whatever. At the end it says she was found with a blood flower and I don't quite know what that means but it sounds beautiful. It's such a beguiling song, we used to play it all the time in France. And when I came back to London, I used to play that song all the time and I was instantly back in the loft Laetitia lived in at the time."

Record That Inspired You To Form A Band
'Nag Nag Nag' - Cabaret Voltaire

"This was the single record that changed my life and changed the way I looked at things. I heard it on John Peel one night in 1979 and it was like a shock out of the blue. It was just the most mad, nutty record. It sort of had the energy of punk but it was like punk from somewhere completely alien. I knew then that was what I wanted to do. Make music that could cause such a reaction. It was that eureka moment."

Record For A Night On The Tiles
'Kitty Bey' - Byron Morris & Unity

"I DJ quite a lot and I always play this. It's definitely the funkiest number that I know. It's very long though - it's like about 16 minutes long so you don't have to play it all. It's very intense and up. It's the music I'd really like to hear before I go out or when I was out. I don't really go out on the tiles that much though!"

Record Guaranteed To Clear The Tourbus
'I Wanna Hold Your Gland' - Drunk John Lennon

"I play a lot of records that clear the tourbus! This always clears the floor when I play it when I DJ as well. It's an American lo-fi thing from the early-'90s and it's an appalling screaming noise version of The Beatles song. It's pretty nauseating but there's something about it that I really love. It really winds people up!"

New Year's Eve, 1999, What's On The Hi-Fi? Nothing
"I'm not gonna be near my hi-fi wherever I am. I've given the millennium no thought whatsoever. I can't really get my head around it. It's just a date! It makes me feel claustrophobic, to be honest. I really want to do a gig that night. We wanted to be support for Barbra Streisand in Vegas!"

Record You Would Like Played At Your Funeral
'I Like The Sunrise' - Mel Torme & Duke Ellington

"It's about someone who likes the new sunrise and the new day after all the things he's done the night before. It's done in a really odd way 'cos while he's singing it, the music's kind of undercutting everything. The music is about doubt. And it's done at a sort of funeral pace. That would be nice. But, then again, I don't really care 'cos I'm dead!"
