Stone Temple Pilots fire frontman Scott Weiland

No reason has been given for the dismissal of the former Velvet Revolver member

Stone Temple Pilots have fired the band's frontman and founder Scott Weiland.

A statement was released by the band which simply said: "Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland". No reason was given for the 'termination' of the band's lead singer.

In a statement issued earlier today (February 27) to Rolling Stone, Weiland commented:

I learned of my supposed 'termination' from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be 'terminated' from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday.

The band, who formed in the mid-1980s and released their debut album 'Core' in 1992, split in 2002 but reformed in 2008, releasing a self-titled album in 2010. The alt.rock band toured last year.

Scott Weiland's own solo tour of North America starts on March 1 in Flint, Michigan.

Last year Scott Weiland said he is "completely open" to fronting Velvet Revolver again after being kicked out of the band in 2008. At the time Slash said Weiland was fired because of his "increasingly erratic onstage behaviour and personal problems".

Weiland last year told Rolling Stone: "I am completely open to it and I know there are other guys in the band that are completely open to it. There have been some things that have stood in the way that aren't anything that have to do with the band – just other players, agents."
